Khajuraho lies to the north of state of Madhya Pradesh. Legend has it that Khajuraho was founded by Chardravarman, the son of the moon god Chandra, who descended on a beautiful maiden as she bathed in a stream. One of the greatest sights is temple complex which saw a flowering of architecture in this small village came through in period 950 to 1050, a mere 100 years. Chandela dynasty built 85 temples of which 22 survive today. The magnificent group of temples here made of sandstone, is now a UNESCO world heritage site. The sacred temples are arranged into three regional divisions: western, southeast and southeast.
